Whitman, as Printed

A FONT OF TYPE.

This latent mine—these unlaunch’d voices—passionate powers,Wrath, argument, or praise, or comic leer, or prayer devout,(Not nonpareil, brevier, bourgeois, long primer merely,)These ocean waves arousable to fury and to death,Or sooth’d to ease and sheeny sun and sleep,Within the pallid slivers slumbering.
Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass (Philadelphia: David McKay, 1891–92), page 386 · The page as printed ↗

Whitman published the first Leaves of Grass himself. He paid a Brooklyn printer, Andrew Rome, to print it, set about ten of its pages in type (by his own account), and had most of the copies bound in green cloth stamped in gold. These pages study his books as made things, and they were made with stanza, a press anyone can use.
